tsfdm, TY for that article.. very interesting...We associate certain odors with memories of events..Perhaps it is the whiff of certain drugs being released, imbalances of the metabolic system, internal decay...but if we noticed it once, it is forever linked with an event.

@ Catt, I do think that some people are especially perceptive..Possibly they have a life style that doesn't dull sense of smell..they may not even recognize that they "smell" what alerts them..then we call it a 6th sense, but maybe it is just better olefactory senses.

Then again, with experience, comes an ability to "interpret" what our senses perceive.  Mom's hospice social worker visited many different people in various stages of "shutting down" and there were a variety of conditions leading to this stage.  She had experiences that most of us do not.  I was fortunate that she shared that with me,,that she knew I wouldn't be reactionary.

Oh my Word !!! there is ABSOLUTELY  a specific odor that some people have when their bodies are deteriorating.   I have worked in the medical field my entire adult life.  ABSOLUTELY... some people exude an unforgettable ( yet unexplainable) odor  when their bodies are shutting down.   I cannot describe it... but can only say that once you have smelled it... it will be imprinted on your brain forever.  It is sort of sweet.... yet rancid.  It  is something that cannot really be described in words.  You have to experience it to recognize it.

Ever since my father died at home in 1998, i have been able to detect the same odour in people nearing their time of death. The odour stayed in the bedroom for months even tho evetything was scrubbed clean and aired. I work in aged care and im not sure if this is odour detection is a curse or a blessing. I akin the odour to the smell of ammonia. So yes, i agree there is a definite odour.
