rosie, don't you dare blame yourself for going away. by your own admission, your dad has always been stubborn and done pretty much as he pleased. i hope you enjoyed the time you did have away. you are going to need to draw on that as a reserve for what lies ahead. i'm so sorry he got hurt. i am sorry he is in pain. i guess i'm surprised that they are going to do the surgery as anestics are very hard on old people. i know you feel sick about this but no one can predict what course life will take. you are right, you will not be able to take care of his needs after this so it is time to start making a good plan for his comfort and care in another place. you have been an incredible example of caring to all of us. you KNOW that you never left a stone unturned in his care. please share with us the next steps of this journey. come to us any time you need a shoulder, support or something to share with us. eldercare is universal. no oceans separate our trials, tears or successes and joys. prayers for strength and peace for you and your family. much love. gail |

Reply with quote | #18 | Thanks to you all for your support. Haven't heard anything from the hospital yet but I assume they have no choice but to operate. Dad may well survive an operation as he is strangely tough for all his present frailty; however to be honest, the best rsult would be if he slipped away during the operation. For some time he has been complaining about his life and how he wishes it was over, and how he feels "helpless, hopeless and useless". Hearing this day after day has really got me down, as there is nothing I can do about it. Now I can only make myself busy with chores(of which there are many) and wait to see what happens.

Please know you and your Dad will be in my prayers. I'm so sorry this happened! It's no-ones fault, but just one of those things that sometimes happen.

Reply with quote | #23 | I have heard from the orthopedic surgeon - Dad made it through the operation and is in a stable condition so far. I think the physiotherapist will have a hard time getting him on his feet again as before the fall he preferred to lie in bed all day and sleep! However I am relieved of that problem - the burden of physical care will now fall on professionals, which I much prefer! I will still have the running of the property to look after and all his business affairs so I'll be kept busy. The hospital will have to monitor him closely the next few days in case of pneumonia, which is a real possibility with elders. I'll keep you posted on his progress.

Oh, Rosie, sorry about your dad. It's true though, they fall everywhere/anytime/all the time. My dad did as well, at home, in hospital, at ALF....with, without people around. And like you I felt guilty each time for no valid reason...please don't believe it was your fault for going away for a couple of days! See what we do to ourselves. Stay strong & Peace be with you - Ann |

Reply with quote | #26 | I'm so glad to hear he made it through surgery. I swear, I sometimes feel like we could put them in a padded cell and something would go wrong! (Sorry... bad mood because I am completely out of ideas for making the telephone any easier to use for my mom.)

Rosie: Glad to hear that he made it through the surgery. Now comes the even more difficult part. I am glad that the professionals will be there to take over in that department, but there is still so much to do and to be concerned with. Take care of yourself during this time. Hugs-Sparkle |
